Charles Du Bois Mid-Century Revitalization

For this project, I undertook a complete interior and exterior renovation of a stunning Charles Du Bois, AIA, Mid-Century home. My goal was to respect the architectural pedigree while modernizing the function for contemporary living.

I reimagined the heart of the home by updating the oversized kitchen with quartz countertops and stainless steel appliances, with the space looking out to a private patio. To improve the flow, I connected the dining room—highlighted by its original vaulted wood-beamed ceilings, which I painted to brighten the space—to the family room, which is anchored by a central, dual-sided fireplace.

Honoring the classic Mid-Century ethos of indoor-outdoor living, I installed two sets of accordion doors that open fully to the park-like backyard. This created a seamless transition to the outdoor spaces I designed, including an expansive covered patio, a prolific vegetable garden, and an updated, heated pool.

In the private quarters, I designed the primary suite to serve as a true retreat, adding a fireplace, a massive walk-in closet with custom built-ins, and a resort-style en suite bath complete with a steam shower and soaking tub. For the secondary wing, I thoughtfully updated the Jack-and-Jill bedrooms and designed a central bathroom featuring fun yet timeless tile and a floating dual-sink vanity.

I also ensured that utility spaces were not an afterthought. I designed the new laundry room to balance style with functionality, selecting specific cabinetry and quartz folding surfaces to meet a busy family's needs. Finally, my exterior renovation included a carefully considered landscape plan, blending a drought-tolerant xeriscape in the front yard with a lush grassy play area, mature fruit trees, and blooming flower beds in the back.
